PUT ON A HAPPY FACE

I was so excited when hearing that Joker will be filmed, I thought it was the solo movie of DC universe and Jared Leto might play as Joker like it was in Suicide Squad. I imagined that it would be an anti-superhero or villain movie. There would be a sadistic and action scene with light humour which tell us about how Arthur became Joker and how he fell in love with Harley Queen like how Wade Wilson became Deadpool and fell in love with Vanessa. But after watching the trailer I just realized, It is not part of DC universe but produced by Warner Bross and starred by Joaquin Phoenix. And after watching the movie I think I was totally wrong. It is not an anti superhero movie but more like a psychological movie that will bring your feeling up and down, sad and depressed like a roller coaster.

This movie actually talks about mental health, Arthur Fleck is a party clown and aspiring stand-up comedian who lives with his mother, Penny, in Gotham City. Gotham is rife with crime and unemployment, leaving segments of the population disenfranchised and impoverished. Arthur suffers from a disorder that causes him to laugh at inappropriate times, and depends on social services for medication. Because of the political situation which become worse, his medication must be stopped and he don’t take medicine anymore. At the same time he just got fired from his job because of his friend. His world suddenly become dark and feels everything is unfair, he can’t control her act and mad at everyone. He started being rough and killed people. It is worst.

Joker becomes viral in my society, many people talk about it and it became a trending tropic in twitter. Some people said “Joker was a kind person who has hurt much” to be honest I don’t agree with this thought, it sounds like “you can be a Joker (who is rough and sadistic) when you are hurt” isn’t it? I think they miss one thing that “Joker has his own condition”, he has mental illness and out of medicine, he gets delusions so he can’t control his act. The worst thing is people don’t know his condition and then think he is a freak, pity and rude. Mental illness is no joke, indeed.

Talking about mental illness, not long after I watched the movie the shocking news came “The Kpop Star Sulli  former member of F(X) just found death” L. Fyi F(X) is Korean girlband who was got their popularity in around 2012-2016, Sulli has stopped her activity from F(X) since 2016 and started being solo artist. It broke my heart, F(X) reminded me of my teenage life when I was in Senior High School, I used to listen to their songs often. The more shocking news is Sulli reports doing suicide to own her life because of depression. For years, she had been a target of hateful vitriol online from netizens who disapprove of her public persona. Perhaps most infamously, Sulli posted photos to her Instagram of herself wearing a shirt without a bra and sometimes posted  sexy photos in instagram, it againsts the Korean norms. [link]

Lately, it is just revealed that actually Sulli had suffered depression for years, she was young, and came of age in the public spotlight. She had been active as an entertainer since age 11, and like many child stars, found the transition into adulthood stressful with press outlets scrutinising her every move. People don’t really care about it and all they do are judge her and leave hate comments. What an Irony.

I thought mental health is just an issue that I hear and watch in movies or news. I thought people around me lived their life happily without any battle. But after observing those issues I started realizing that people around me might be dealing with their mental health.

Some months ago a friend of mine texted me at midnight “Si do you still awake?” and I said “yess, why?”.  She replied “I feel so chaotic right now, I need to cry a river to let it go, can I do a video call?”. Fifteen minutes later I watched her cry on my phone without saying anything, I tried to ask what happened but she didn’t reply. I stopped asking and kept watching her crying. Until now I don’t even know her problem, but the one thing that I know is she felt much better after crying that night. She said to me, thanks for listening to her without any comment and judgement

Another way, some weeks ago I texted my old friend who got out from social media for some time. We asked about our condition lately, surprisingly she said “Tbh I felt so dizzy in my head si, feel like I got depressed with many things in life, I ever thought to end everything that time”. That sentence got me speechless, I just never thought that my friend ever faced that kind of difficulty. I couldn’t say anything but suggested her to get a help (maybe from the pro) when she needed it :(

As I said before, mental health is indeed an issue. Maybe we can try to listen for understanding not for replying. If we can’t spread love at least don’t spread hate. We never know what people fight everyday, We are all still learning how to deal with stress, to heal from a broken heart, or to let anxiety go. I think adulthood seems like a Hunger Games Arena, we always try our best to be careful and watch our step, but the trial always waits in front of us. We fight different battles and survive in any condition everyday. Hang on, tributes!

How about watching Cinderella to keep us sober after watching Joker? Because Ella’s mom said “Have a courage and be kind, always”.
